Chocolate Negroni

The Chocolate Negroni is a great variation on the classic Negroni, invented by Count Negroni in 1919. Or was it his uncle? History is vague, but one of those Negronis wanted a stouter Americano and swapped soda water for gin. Patrons began ordering “one of Count Negroni’s drinks” and the name began.

CHOCOLATE NEGRONI

1 oz London Dry Gin
3/4 oz Punt E Mes vermouth amaro
3/4 oz Campari (cacao optional)
1/4 oz Creme de Cacao (white or dark)
6 dashes chocolate bitters

If you add a tablespoon of cacao nibs to a few ounces of Campari and let it sit for an hour or two, you’ll get even more cocoa/chocolate flavor in your cocktail.
Mix all ingredients together in mixing glass with ice, and stir until very well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass with one large cube (or whatever is in your icemaker) and garnish with an orange slice.
