This 1940’s riff on an Old Fashioned increases the Bourbon or Rye (which we prefer) and uses Maraschino instead of simple syrup to give cherry and nut notes along with the orange and Angostura. It’s also the name of my boat. 🙂 This cocktail specifically mentioned Canadian Rye as the spirit base. However, Canadian Rye was often not anywhere close to a rye, as there was no mandated minimum amount of rye, and was more like a bourbon. American Rye, on the other hand, required at least 51% rye and is much better as a rye base. So the historically accurate drink, with Canadian Rye, would be… bourbon. But the better cocktail, in my opinion, is with a high rye so you get all the spice notes blended with the maraschino.
FANCY FREE
2 oz Bourbon or Rye
3/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
Dash Angostura Bitters
Dash Orange Bitters
The hardest part of this cocktail is deciding on Canadian Whisky or American Bourbon, or whatever you like. Personally, I like a bonded Rye (American) like Rittenhouse. Pour and dash into a mixing glass with ice, stir and strain into a rocks glass with a large cube and enjoy.
